I made this game in 7 days for VimJam.  It was very difficult so I made the post jam version much easier.

Distress Signal

A space themed looter-shooter bullet hell where you must investigate a distress signal at precisely 1337 astronomical units away from earth. Space is not for the faint hearted.

TIPS

  • Asteroids provide cover.
  • Enemies can also destroy asteroids, which helps you mine.
  • Asteroids and Enemies are spawned in the direction you're facing.
  • When you've whittled down to 1 enemy practice dodging their shots.

Zero deaths and first try! I assume you reduced the difficulty, coming here after watching Vimlark's video. Also, it felt like I was playing through one of Kurzgesagt's videos lol. Great job on the art!

me too almost it was just that i played around

The game was really good! Managed to complete it on the first try, nice rest during my work hours :) I'm guessing you did change the difficulty? I found myself finding too many HP packs from asteroids which was the reason why I could finish it during my first try. I'm also guessing that the closer you are to the distress signal guy, the more HP packs you get? It did feel like I got more HP packs the further I was from earth.

I also think that the enemy ships did little damage, but considering how close they were to me and how they stick to you, it's reasonable.

Using asteroids as cover while fighting the enemy ships then breaking the asteroids myself when I had less HP was the way to go. (Edit: And it felt really good as well haha!)

I initially thought I could deal with more than 1 enemy ship using the missile (RMB) because it was kind of an AoE effect, but I noticed that I could only take down 1 ship at a time and that it was a 1-hit missile.

The RMB and Space commands were a little confusing at first. I initially thought that the space button was some sort of dash that I could use to dodge shots while in the middle of a fight, but it is more of a booster to reach your goal faster, and can only be used when the bar is full. Still, once you figure things out, everything works smoothly!

It was a great experience!

Great Game! I like the vector graphics. But I'd like it to be a bit more challenging, this was easy enough to beat it in the first try.

Very cool game! How do you make a smooth scrolling camera like this in unity?

(1 edit)

The camera script is similar to the once from brackeys tutorial, but I changed it to be 2D. The key to the smoothness is the Lerp function.

Beat it first try, that was crazy. Vimlark is just bad at games.

Haha all jokes aside, that game is amazing, and I have no idea how I beat it first try.

I changed the game significantly after the jam ๐Ÿ˜‚ It really was a bit too hard, it's not much more playable, but perhaps a little toooo playable hmmmm.

Good idea that sadly gets boring quite fast with how easy it is evade the shots of the one enemy you left - with no reinforcement coming without him dead. Is there some kind of ending to the game? When I got back to earth nothing happened, I even killed my buddy the one enemy I left alive. The kurzgesagt-esque graphics are beautiful though.

I made the game in 7 days for VimJam, I wish I had more time as it's pretty rough in some places. When the voting is over and I can edit the submission I will do something about the 1 enemy exploit.

I think  you encountered a bug... The ship is supposed to land on earth and a little message saying the rescue mission was a success should come up. It's not the most exhilarating thing, but I made the ending on the last day of the jam ๐Ÿ˜‚

Thanks for taking the time to play my game, I really appreciate it.

Super good with the use of the theme. graphics were nice, and the music and sound were good. I need more feedback as to when Iโ€™m actually doing damage. Dealing with enemies was a bit frustrating in general.

I really wanted to get the enemies flashing white when they're damaged but I didn't have enough time. I submitted this to VimJam with seconds to spare ๐Ÿ˜…. When the jam voting is over and I can edit the submission, I will do some work to bring the difficulty down. Thank you for taking the time to look at my game and offer feedback.

Rescue mission was a success! Fun game cute graphics!

Thanks for checking out my game, really appreciate it. I'll check our your submission soon.

Beautiful graphics, but as the other commenter said, I couldn't get past the enemies because they were impossible to kill and because they move with the player exactly it was almost impossible to dodge their shots.

The game is hard and I really threw you in the deep end so I wrote some tips in the description. I forgot to mention I made this game in 7 days for a game jam, so it's pretty rough around the edges. Once the voting is finished I will make some changes to bring the difficulty down.

Thank you for taking the time to check out my game.

So, the enemy AI is a bit messed up. It's basically impossible to kill an entire group of them, because they have so much health, and there are so many of them. The AI are really fast, and they track you, which makes it impossible to escape them. I basically had to just die until I got lucky and moved another 100 or so units.

I forgot to mention I made it in 7 days for a game jam. The enemies are hard but certainly not impossible. I have realised that the difficulty curve is very unforgiving and will make some serious changes and additions once the voting for the jam is over, and I can edit the submission.

I appreciate you taking the time to play my game!
